Project Synthesis
Time Frame/ Year: 1976
Sponsor: National Science Foundation/ Norris Harms/Univeristy of Colorado
Aim of the Movement:
The goal of Project Synthesis was to research the discrepancies between the actual state of science education and the desired state of education.
Major Impact on Science Education:
A large gap existed between the actual state of science education and the desired state of science education. It was discovered through Project Synthesis was that science was not considered a high priority when compared to other subjects such as language arts, math and social studies. This was the case throughout all grade levels.
Academic preparation was the sole goal for most science teachers as opposed to the inclusion of other goals such as social relevance, career awareness and personal needs.
It was also discovered that teachers were the key to the success of the student but that those teachers relied heavily on textbooks.
Long Term Contribution:
The study demonstrated that there was still much work to be done in closing the gap between the actual and desired state of science education. It suggested new science programs that would not only prep students academically but also address other important topics such as personal needs, societal issues and career awareness.
