Academies
Timeframe/Year: Mid to Late 1800's
Sponsors: Pestalozzi
Aim of the Movement:
1. The mid 1800's saw a shift in education from the classical education to more of a practical education through the creation of academies. The academies included classical education such as the studies of Greek and Latin languages but also included other subjects such as science.
2. A second goal of including more modern subjects into the school curriculum was to prepare students for everyday life and in order to better do this, electives were also infused into the school day. Almost 70 different subjects such as bookkeeping, forensics, engineering, agriculuture chemistry and many more were offered as a means to prepare students for the real world.
Major Impact on Science Education:
The most important factor this movement had was the fact that science, in a variety forms, was now a solid part of the school curriuculum and classical education was being pushed to the wayside.
Long Term Contribution:
This era changed schools forever. The addition of electives into the curriculum made school more useful to the masses and also more appealing, encouraging students to stay in school longer. Science was also in the curriculum to stay and classical education was making its way out.
