College Entrance Committee
Time Frame/Year: 1895
Sponsor: National Education Association
Aim of the Movement:
The aim of the creation of the College Entrance Committee was to implement the recommendations of the Committee of Ten on high school course requirements for college admitance.
Major Impact on Science Education:
Although the Committe of Ten recommended a large increase in science courses be taken at the high school level in order to prepare students for college, the College Entrance Committee only required one year of science to gain college entrance and that additional science courses taken would be considered electives.
Long Term Contribution:
Although only one year of science was required for college entrance, this was the beginning of establishing science as a subject of importance. As various science sub-committees formed in response to the College Entrance Committee, several ideals of science emerged. One example of those ideals is that the laboratory was to be the central focus of science courses as science , unlike other subjects, offered direct experience with the natural world.
